Today’s question is, do you believe that having a mission statement is important?
Yes! Yes! A hundred times, yes!
Having a mission statement in your business is very, very important, but what is way more important than having a mission statement is actually using your mission statement. A lot of the times we start off our business and we go through like how to start our business and you Google it and you look it up and you go to your business resource center and you find out all this information and one of the key things everybody tells you is to write your mission statement. So you sit down and you work really hard on it, and you figure out what your mission is, even though really in the back of your head the only mission you have right now is to make some money, but that’s not what you put down on paper. You put down what sounds good, what seems good? And I mean, for some business owners that might not be the case.
If you’re a serial entrepreneur or you’re really savvy at business, then you probably will actually sit down and do your mission statement. You’ll do a full on business plan because you’re probably gonna be looking for investors and things like that. But for the masses, for most people, they get into business because they’re passionate about something that they want to bring to the world. They just wanna do this one thing and get paid for it. It’s something that they enjoy doing. Most businesses start off with a passion, and they’re not typically started by people with a lot of business savvy necessarily. So what ends up happening with those people quite often is that they hear that they have to create a mission statement so they sit down and create a mission statement and then it gets filed in some folder somewhere and they never look at it and it just collects digital dust in a Google drive somewhere. And that is the last it’s ever seen. And that doesn’t do anybody, any amount of good whatsoever.
What we need to be doing with our mission statement is we need to be using it. We need to be referring to it over and over again in our business, take the information from our mission statement and infuse it into the copy that’s on our website, into the copy that we put into proposals into the copy that we put into Facebook ads. Communicate our mission to our potential clients or our potential students or our potential customers. We need to communicate it to our peers and our colleagues and anybody that we’re gonna hire even subcontractors really should get access to your mission and understand what you’re trying to accomplish.
And we need to review it over and over again. It’s not enough to just read it once you need to be referring back to it on a regular basis. You need to be thinking about it and taking into consideration when you are planning things for your business, when you’re assessing your business and making changes and making big decisions, you need to review your mission and make sure that those decisions that you’re making are actually gonna move you forward one step closer to that mission that you are on. So yes, I believe having a mission is important. I believe using your mission statement in your business is much, much, much more important.
